COMMITTING TO COMMUTING

Kickstand drives to work for the first time in 2009 on Feb. 6

I have never been much for New Year's Resolutions. In the past I've made my share and usually have abandon them early in the year, so I quit making them years ago. Now commitments are a different story, especially when they involve motorcycles. I have made it a habit every year to make a commitment to ride to work every day. I usually start commuting late March or early April and continue into November until there is a danger of encountering ice on the road. In one way, it is a necessity as my wife and I only own one car. We are able to work out our schedules to allow her to drop me off and pick me up. Since there are a number of drawbacks to this arrangement, I look forward to getting my cycle out and start commuting. I commuted to work today making it the earliest commute I have ever done. This was made possible because of my "new " motorcycle a Suzuki 125. It starts easily in cold weather and is small and maneuverable. It was 10 degrees Fahrenheit for the morning drive with nice clear roads. The ride home was warmer at 35 degrees. I don't expect to be able to ride much in February, but when the weather cooperates I will make the ride.

Maybe it is time for you to consider becoming a committed commuter. It takes determination, an adventurous spirit and some all weather cycle apparel. The Nobody Motorcycle Club values riding in inclement weather, because we are stupid!

So why not join the few, the strange, the all weather commuters. You will rack up many practical miles, gain confidence and skills in inclement weather and become known as that crazy biker.
